CARRIER' CONTAINER PACKING LIST
What is a Container Packing List?
-
Container Packing List is a document that lists detailed information about the goods loaded into a container. It is usually prepared by the shipper and submitted to the carrier or port authorities.
-
The information provided by the shipper on the Container Packing List includes cargo-related details such as technical specifications, characteristics (e.g., fragile or perishable), type of goods, and delivery destinations.
-
This document is submitted to the port to ensure that your cargo arrives at the correct location and remains undamaged. The shipping line will issue the Container Packing List (also known as Packing List Ha) along with the booking confirmation, or the customer can download it directly from the system.
-
Note: The Container Packing List / Packing List Ha is different from the Packing List issued by the shipper. The Packing List is usually attached to the Invoice and sent by the shipper to the consignee.
How to Fill in the Information on the Container Packing List
When preparing shipping documents, accurately filling out the Container Packing List is essential. Below is a detailed guide for each required field:
-
Shipper: This refers to the exporter of the goods, whose name appears as the shipper on export documents such as the contract, Bill of Lading, and Certificate of Origin.
-
Booking number: This is issued by the carrier to confirm that the shipment has been accepted. Each booking has a unique number, which must be correctly entered on the Container Packing List
-
Vessel name and Voyage number: These details are taken from the booking. If there are any changes, they must be updated according to carrier notices. Accurate input ensures smooth port entry and timely loading.
-
Container number: This is the number printed on the container’s outer door, typically located on the right-hand side of the container.
-
Container type: Indicate the actual container type as specified in the release order: dry container (general), reefer container, tank container, open-top container, flat rack, etc.
-
Seal number: This is the seal issued by the carrier. For multiple containers and seals, make sure each seal number matches the correct container—do not alter or interchange them.
-
Port of discharge: The destination port where the cargo will be delivered, as stated in the sales contract. This is found in the booking confirmation.
-
Transshipment port: The intermediate port where the container is transferred from one vessel to another before reaching the final destination. This information is also provided in the booking.
-
Cargo information: Clearly state the cargo name, quantity, gross weight, and number of packages based on actual shipment data. If applicable, specify special handling requirements such as temperature settings (for reefer cargo) or hazard labels (for dangerous goods).
Filling out the Container Packing List completely and accurately helps ensure on-time delivery, reduces transportation risks, and supports smooth customs clearance.
